CEFC China

On the afternoon of September 22, CEFC China Energy Company Limited (CEFC China) and Associação Mutualista Montepio (Montepio), the largest mutual association in Portugal, signed a strategic cooperation agreement at the headquarters of Montepio in Lisbon. Ye Jianming, Chairman of CEFC China, attended the event and had an in-depth talk with António Tomás Correia, Chairman of Montepio, and its board members.

Montepio was founded in 1840 as a mutual association in Portugal. It is the first institution of its kind in this country specializing in social security and comprehensive financial services, with over 300 banking branches all around Portugal and banks in other Portuguese-speaking countries. Montepio and its subsidiaries operate across a broad spectrum of business, whose products and services include bank’s financial products, insurance, pension fund, investment fund and real estate assets management. Wu Hongbing, Vice President of CEFC China, and Miguel Teixeira Coelho, CFO of Montepio, signed the agreement on behalf of each side. The cooperation will be translated into actions via a series of specific agreements and projects.

During the meeting, both sides expressed appreciation of each other’s corporate culture and values, striking a consensus that there is huge potential for future cooperation. Mr. Ye expressed his gratitude to both teams for their efficient and pragmatic approach to promoting the cooperation and highly recognized Montepio’s heritage of its profound culture over the previous 170 plus years. He said, “The signing of the strategic agreement marks the first step toward a promising bilateral cooperation. CEFC China will follow recommendations put forward by Prime Minister Antonio Costa and work closely with Montepio to give respective strength into full play to enhance the cooperation starting from financial area and extending to oil and gas, new energy, infrastructure construction such as port building, and power sectors between China and Portugal as well as other Portuguese-speaking countries.” According to Mr. Correia, this is the first time, over more than 170 years, for Montepio to initiate cooperation with an enterprise from a non-Portuguese-speaking country. “With mutual recognition of each other’s values in place, Montepio is looking forward to a deeper cooperation with CEFC China and will promote the cooperation with all-out efforts”, Mr. Correia said.

The event was also attended by Guo Lin, Chairman of CEFC Shanghai Securities Limited and other business leaders from CEFC China, and representatives from Montepio, including General Manager Pedro Gouveia Alves and members of the Board.
